קורן מביט אל כיתת בית ספר היסודי משנות ה- 60-70 של המאה הקודמת אל כסאות העץ, אל הלוח והגיר, ומעל הכל מבטו מופנה אל קבוצת חברי הכיתה. זיכרון ילדותו מוטמע במסגרת סיפור כללי, חינוכי ולאומי של ישראל דאז. תקופה בה מערכת החינוך התנהלה על פי דגם ממלכתי-חילוני אחיד וקוהרנטי, בהפעלת "גישת האינטגרציה", שעקרונותיה היו חתירה לצמצום הפערים הכלכליים־חברתיים־לימודיים בין האוכלוסיות השונות.
התלמידים נדרשו להתאים עצמם לחומרי וקצב הלימוד, לנורמות ותכתיבים חינוכיים וחברתיים. חולצת התלבושת האחידה הבית ספרית היוותה חלק אינטגרלי מסך חלקי השלם, במטרה לייצר תחושת שייכות, אחידות, שוויון, וצמצום ייחודו של הפרט
השאיפה לאחדות קולקטיבית כיתתית מסומנת אצל קורן בציור אקספרסיבי ובקומפוזיציה צפופה, במסת צבע כתמית וקצבית, המרוקנת את זהות התלמיד לעיתים לכדי סימן. כך למשל בציורו בשמן על בד תמונת המחזור, מוצגת פוזת הצילום הכיתתית האופיינית.

ובעבודות נוספות, גדולות ממד, ההפשטה מוקצנת לכדי מסת ראשים, עיניים, ופיות אחידים המרחפים כחלק רפטטיבי בינות לכתמי צבע המסמלים את התלבושת האחידה בצבעה הכתום. כך גם ברישומים בעפרון על המצע הלבן. המקצב נשמר, והקווים מתאגדים ליחידה אחת. העבודה המופשטת מתייחסת לממשות קונקרטית שהיתה ואינה, כאשר הצורות הביומורפיות מצביעות על נוכחותן של דמויות כייצוג פיגורטיבי ומופשט למחצה. במובן מסוים, על פי קורן יש כאן הומאז' לאמן ווילם דה קונינג, אלא שמעל לכל,

We Were Fireflies - Roey Koren
When we were children, there were fireflies in the bushes in Givatayim..."- (R.K.)
Koren looks back at the elementary school classroom from the 1960s and 1970s, the wooden chairs, the blackboard, and the chalk, and above all, his gaze is directed at his classmates. His childhood memory is embedded in the framework of a general, educational, and national story of Israel at the time. It was a period in which the education system operated according to a uniform and coherent state model, employing the "international approach," which principles were striving to reduce economic-social-academic gaps between the various populations. The students were expected to adapt to the materials and the pace as well as the educational and social norms and dictates. The school uniform shirt was an integral part of the whole, meant to create a sense of belonging, uniformity, and equality and minimize the exceptionality of the individual.
Koren's aspiration for collective class unity is evident in the expressive painting, the dense composition, and a spotted, rhythmic mass of color, which sometimes empties the individual student's identity into a sign. For example, his oil-on-canvas painting, the Class Photo, shows the typical group pose: the students face the camera in rows, with the teacher at the center.
In other large-scale works, he radicalized the abstraction into a mass of uniform heads, eyes, and mouths floating as a repetitive part among splashes of color that stand for the orange school uniform shirt. The same is true of pencil drawings on white ground. The rhythm is preserved, and the lines assemble into one unit. The abstract work refers to a concrete reality that has been and is no more when the biomorphic forms indicate the presence of figures as a semi-figurative, semi-abstract representation. According to Koren, in a sense, this is an homage to the artist Willem de Kooning, but above all, his work stems from a deep longing for those days of innocence.
